UQ League - 26/10/11 - FINALS / Party

Hi everyone,

Tonight is the game of the season. Come down to cheer / heckle and have a bit of a social night.

There will be pizza and drinks for the spectators and players

Most importantly, the teams playing off in the final are

Game will start at 7.00

Last point will be at 8.30

The trophy will be presented straight after the final.

OLD hat tournament + Big Sky 11's

Hi all,

The Queensland Hat tournament has been announced. It will be played on the 26th and 27th of November at Annerly soccer club.

If you are wondering, a hat tournament does not mean you all play in hats. It means that you register as individuals and even teams are made from the players list, based on their previous frisbee experience. this tournament is open to all levels so feel free to come down. It will be alot of fun.

The fields have been closed on us again. This means there will be NO GAMES TONIGHT.

If you are still keen to play then come and join us at field 7 at 7.pm. There will be a group of us going to play disc golf (FROLF).

UQ Unigames Selection Camp 23rd July

Hi everyone,

THE AWESOMENESS BEGINS!!!!

We are pleased to announce the first unigames training session and
major selection event.
We have two months and three tournaments to catch up on the
southerners, so lets get to it!!

We are running a full day of training, information dissemination,
frisbee playing, and an evening of team bonding and mayhem on:

SATURDAY 23rd JULY. 9AM to 5PM at OVAL 7.

This will be followed by an evening of team bonding and mayhem in true
UQ/ unigames style.

Apologies for the late notice, but lets get as any people as possible
there. We expect anyone that wants to be on the unigames team to be
there unless they really can't be. It is important that we have around
18 people there so that we can have two full teams and a sub!!! Please
RSVP to megz: meganbarnes84@gmail.com either way or like my FB status
ASAP. Remember, this is a selection event.

Valid excuses include: not in the country, still on placement, tried
bribery, sex, sneakiness and calling in sick and still can't get
someone to cover your shift at work

Excuses that won't fly: my college is having a drinking event, my
college has a touch competition, i already told someone i would fill
in for them at Rugby that day, my friend is having a BBQ, my
girlfriend doesn't like it when i leave her home alone, i picked up
some chick last night and i can't get rid of her, errrm i don't know
eh.

The plan for the day is to do a bunch of targeted skills activities
that focus on the stuff that is important to us (e.g. fast disc
movement, on field space, break side cutting), learn some zone
(offence and defence), give people some individual feedback, and get
some catch up on playing together (THE SOUTHERN TEAMS HAVE BEEN
TRAINING SINCE APRIL AND JUST PLAYED EUG's).

We will also go over any questions that peeps have on the rules,
payments, if you really have to listen to Gref... etc. at some point.
The rules are attached, please try to read them. If you have an iphone
(or possibly other smartphone), you can download the rules quiz as an
app (search for WFDF in the app store) and bring it with you.

Please Bring:
Water bottle (or two... one for each sideline)
Sunscreen
Waterproofs jacket
Warm stuff for later
Disc
A pink and a blue shirt - go for black and white if you don;t have
those colours . Other colours are not cool here.
Anything else pink and blue, just for fun.
A "lovers" or "unicorn" themed change of clothes for the evening
including PROPER SHOES.

Err... think thats it... DISSEMINATE TO ANYONE WHO GOES TO UQ AND
PLAYS FRISSSSBEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Hey frisbee people,

Firstly the party:

It's on Wednesday after league, so there's no excuse to miss it.

That means it starts from 8:30pm or so. Try to have a shower somewhere before you come.

Theme is Post-apocalypse. People who don't come dressed as something are automatically volunteering for frisbee boat racing.

The address is 170 Taringa Parade, Taringa/Indooroopilly

Bringing your own alcohol will ensure the party keeps going, but there will be some basic stuff like goon punch.

Secondly, we'll be having a final between the two highest ranked teams that still have players every week.

So that will be between Sasquatch and Blue Job.

There will also be other games going on while the final is on, but we'll try to stagger them 15 minutes earlier or so, so that we can watch the closing minutes of the final drinking beers and heckling Moto and Gary.

Be down there at 6:30 or so if possible.

Hello UQ Ultimate players,

The UQ Ultimate disc club will be sending a team to compete at the Australian University Games and we want you!

Uni games will be the Sport Super Center held on the Gold Coast from September 25 to October 1 (mid-semester break).

This is a great chance to play some high level Ultimate against teams from all around the country. As well as playing hard we will be partying hard with social events all throughout the week.

Once again UQ has closed the fields and we're left pining for the
frisbee. As an attempt to stave off the feelings of abandonment and
isolation that will inevitably creep in, I'm arranging some disc golf
on Friday night for all interested parties.

UQ League Semester 1 2011: Round 2

Hi folks,

It's time for the second proper week of UQ League - Since the addition
of two new teams, the disc in the dark results have been discounted.

Last week saw Incredible Huck edge it over Trevor's White cocaine
referencing team in a nailbiter, SMIle get up by one point over Ranga
Red, the grey and blue teams tie, and Sasquatch beat out the Black

UQ League: Disc in the Dark!

Hey frisbee players,

The first week of UQ League will be starting this Wednesday at 7:00pm. The teams have been sorted, and plans have been made. Each team has it's own shirt colour, so please bring that coloured shirt down to the game. If you don't have a team yet or you're worried about the team you're on, you can email us at uqultimate@hotmail.com

Due to the floods we've been having some troubles with the fields, so for the first week of the season, we're going to play disc in the dark. Disc in the dark is like regular ultimate, with glowsticks and light up frisbees. Don't wear cleats or tagged shoes. Because we're playing the dark, we don't want to risk injury.

The location will be at the fields across from Oval 7, on the corner of Coleridge Road and Carmody Road. There will be a section with lamps on the field where we will meet up before the games. (MAP)

Following ultimate, we'll be have some beverages and food at the fields. We'll have some soft drinks, but if you'd like to imbibe you should catch a bus or get a lift.

If you have any glow in the dark or light up paraphernalia, wear it down. We can get our rave on.

Hi everyone,

I hope you have enjoyed your holidays. Unfortunately it is now time to start another semester, and what better way to ease the pain than playing Ultimate! We will be running league Wednesday nights so come down on Market Day and put you name down.

For the first weeks of semester we will be running come and try / learn to play nights at Oakman Park (Google Maps Link)

Try to bring a white and a black shirt (so that we can sort teams), running shoes and a water bottle.

We will start at 7pm and be finishing at around 9pm.

So come down and give it a go. The first weeks are FREE!!

UQ ULTIMATE WINS but ....

We win by hosting the biggest and auguable the best Lovefest this last weekend however, the Mexican took out the tourney with 4 straight wins - Griffith took out the beloved Spirit of the Game (SotG) Award. Up and coming champion Sophie Stewart and international star Oscar Hernandez won the Above and Beyond awards and the spoon went to UQ's Hammer Time.

BPL Round 3 - Foot on the BUG

Round 3 - UQ was back taking on the deeply talented line up of the Morton Bay Buggers. After a close first 10 points where we went up then down and got back to 5-5. From there UQ worked very hard on D and took almost every opportunity given to convert our breaks. Half time was 8-6 and we run out the whole game to win 15-9. It felt good to be in the winner's circle again and that feeling of playing well as a team.

Just an update of our tourney of the year... LOVEFEST V 20/10

Fields are now confirmed for JFO'G park in Fairfield. 30 -45 mins walk from oval 7 via the green bridge and 2 mins walk from the Fairfield Shopping Centre.

Games played on Saturday from 9am sharp till 4-5pm.

A 9th is in the making - so if this team works out and pays the tourney will reshape a little - with all teams playing 4 slightly longer games and 2 byes and a lunch break. IE Lots of ultimate, lots of team bonding/loving/fun time and a great day out :-)

Night time fun - UQ Ultimate's Lovefest V 20/10 is excited to invite you to warm up drinks at UQ's Red Room - Friday 10/09 from 8pm with rounds of disc golf heading off from there during the night - prizes for the disc golf comp will be presented on Saturday at the tourney.

Ever wanted to have a Captain's meeting in a Pub? That's right Red Room 9pm Friday 10/09 were you will get the draw, the tourney rules and the team packs including your player prizes.

Saturday night at the RE in Toowong. The theme is EXTRA GOOD VISION - we will be auctioning off some more dates and drawing our 20/10 raffle. So get there and enjoy a dance and drink with your team mates and your opponents.

Fund-raising initiatives will be occurring throughout Friday night, Saturday and Saturday night. So therefore even though you've pre paid for this tourney please bring some cash down to help us raising some club capital/support our rep. teams. All fund raising will be good value for money or highly potential in rewarding you for your support.

BPL Round 2 - rough landing thanks to SFC

After a great start to the BPL season and having the capabilities the learn and execute as show on the field last week - it was a rough landing back down on Earth against a red hot Slamtown Flatball Club (SFC) from the Gold Coast. Whether is was the bonding on the driving up from the Coast or the fact “We need to be able to go home and report success. Unlike other teams, we have fans and a solid group of smokin’ hot wives and girlfriends willing us to succeed.” - either way they played well, took an early lead and we never got back in front of them. It was a hard pill but a good wake up call that NOTHING will be given to us in this league.

BPL is back for Season 2 - 2010

Hey all, just an update about our club's open rep team that is playing in the Brisbane Premier League (BPL) The club reduced it's presence in the league from 2 teams for the last 3 years to 1 team this season. The wash up from this is that we have a strong team on paper and hoping to be a force this season and into the future.
Tonight was Round 1 of the season with UQ Ultimate Lovers having a strong game and favourable result of 15-6 against the 2nd seasoned Heroes. Well played boys and let's go from strength to strength this season.

We haven't had the best of luck with weather during the come and try nights, but we are hoping this will improve over the semester.

Tonight will be the first round of the League. Unfortunately due to weather last week, UQ Sport kept the lights off and we were unable to organise the teams. This means that we will be splitting everyone up in to teams tonight before our games.

Looking to start organising teams at 6:30, with games starting at 7:00. Feel free to come down before this and have a throw. Be sure to bring a dark and a light shirt as you may not know what colour team you are playing for. The rise, fall and rise of UQ Passion

Well, its that time again when blogs from around the BPL community reflect on the season and final that was. Indeed – what a season and what a final! The best so far in my biased opinion, though I’ll argue that this is not just because of our success last Thursday night. What follows is my take on Passion’s journey to, and eventual win, in the grand final. Make no mistake – the length of this post is not an attempt to atone for another season of absent blogging from the UQ club, but rather a testament to the fact that in the final ever season played by the fist, there is so much to talk about! Please forgive any errors. I am, after all, a novice when it comes to blogging.

The Season

Pre-season saw plenty of action off the field, with multiple player movements and the entry of a new team in the Heroes being enough to keep the leadership groups bouncing plenty of opinionated emails back and forth. Passion temporarily lost their best player in John to Cobras after Wetnose came a-courting, until in the interests of an even competition, the status quo was restored. A fateful turn of events with the benefits of hindsight. Some of the columnists on various BPL blogs predicted a solid but unspectacular season for UQ Passion, with the main concerns being a reliance on a top few players in the absence of any apparent depth in their roster.

In the uncertain environment of this new-look league, Passion had a cracker of a start with 5 straight wins – enough to occupy top spot in the power rankings for the best part of the first half the season. A fresh on-field leadership style from Gref, some cashing in of a tall roster with an effective deep game, and of course, a bit of luck, were the main reasons behind this early success. Notable games included a first up win over the Lovers, and a big 15-4 win over the Buggers. We also beat Slamtown playing savage and without a bunch of top players being away at various national training camps. I said that luck was involved during this dream opening run, because we only accounted for Dojo by 1 point on a night where they were well off their best, and caught several teams still finding their feet with new combinations and new strategies.

And thus followed the fall. In the last game of the first round robin, Passion lost to a highly motivated Cobras team still reeling from their infamous loss to the Heroes. We then lost to the Lovers in a very forgettable pre-Nats game where nobody on either team wanted to be there. A third consecutive loss to the Dojo followed in which they really exposed some very poor offensive structures. Suddenly, a 5-0 record was 5-3, we’d slipped 5 places in the power rankings, and the tipsters were deserting us. What instigated this extraordinary loss of form? Looking back, I think there was some over-confidence and also an aspect of “1-dimension-ness” in our offence, which was heavily reliant on deep cuts whenever the disc was in the hands of a hucker. We also had inexperienced handlers (myself included) struggling to penetrate the good zone D’s we faced.

It was after this third loss that the tide started to turn back for Passion, despite going on to lose a 4th consecutive game and leading even more people to write us off. This loss against the Buggers was a real turning point for us. During this game, we went down 0-4 at the outset, but unlike previous weeks, the vibe remained positive. We then dominated the middle part of the game to take half, before some big plays late from Bugs resulted in them taking it by 2 points after we had a chance to tie it after time cap. Our improvement in this game from previous weeks was huge, especially on defence, and this was definitely a catalyst for us priding ourselves on our man defence from this point forward. I remember commenting to my team afterward that I had never been so satisfied with a game after a loss.
Following this point in the competition, I believe we only had 1 more loss for the season, being in the final regular season game against the Cobras, who beat us for a second time playing for a place in the semis.

The Final

Honestly, I cant remember many details of the game and I can understand why the regular bloggers make many seemingly obvious mistakes in their recaps. But I’ll do my best.

The start of the game was a pretty sloppy affair. There was an early point in which each team had 3 or 4 turnovers each after taking some horrible options. Certain players from both sides also had serious cases of endzone eyes, perhaps trying to look good for the Dojo footage. Cobras got an early break after generating some blocks with the same zone that won them universe point in their semi against the Dojo (combined with an assassination on John). After taking an early timeout, we reigned in our throws against the zone and also started to take advantage of our favourable height differential with some effective deep looks. Our transition offence was also applied relatively effectively. I think we took the half 8-7, up by a single break after starting on D.
The second half saw wildly contrasting fortunes for each team. Passion won the first point for 9-7 before some fatigued defence and a few errant throws from Passion, combined with the Cobras getting fired up, saw them go on something like a 5-2 run. Score: 11-12 Cobras. From this point forward, Im unsure of the details, but I think time cap went, therefore indicating a game to 14 (please correct me if this is wrong). Cobras scored again: 11-13. Passion now needed 3 consecutive points for the win and the crowd was firmly behind the underdog. I distinctly remember JdR yelling about it being a “famous win” if we could do it from there (to be honest, I didn’t hold out much hope for it). We got the first one after I was able to hit a nice cut to the open corner of the endzone from Gref. In the next point, I thought it was all over when the Cobras came out on offence and a nice huck (from Abra?) was sailing into the endzone, with both Dan and Finn deep of their Passion defenders. Extraordinarily, they both ran underneath the disc and gifted us with another chance. We scored to take it to 13-13, Cobras again with the advantage of offence in universe point. We decided to go man from the outset in this point and after some good initial working of the disc up the field by Cobras, a ¾ field huck went up. I think it was by one of the Stone boys. Luckily I was better positioned to get the disc than Dan, whom I was marking, and Passion had a chance on offence. We worked it up the field, with Gref and myself handling, before Gref threw a ‘blade to the moon’ into the endzone from about halfway. Make no mistake – this was a terrible throw. The only good thing about it was his choice of receiver in John, who read it perfectly, positioned himself between a couple of Cobras players and picked it out of the air with a nice 1-handed grab.

An amazing game. Multiple lead changes. A last-minute comback. Universe point. It doesn’t get much better in a final. The quality of frisbee was also very up and down, with some great plays interspersed with some shockers from both sides. However, I think this only added to the drama.
The highlight for me was that we were able to do this with only 8 players, though this has been the Passion way for a majority of the season. I will single out Alex for having a great game (reflected in his winning of final MVP as voted by the crowd) in both doing what he does best (catching hucks in the endzone), but also coming back to help out with handling against the zone. John also had a very good game in a key match-up with Abra.

The last thing I will say about the final was that it was exceptionally well spirited, as acknowledged by both sides after the game.

Back to the future

Winning the BPL title is the end of the road for UQ Passion, with the club looking to go back to the 1-team model of ~3 years ago. Lets not forget the past efforts of Brett Matzuka, with assistance from Pottsy, in putting together a team of rookie Wednesday night leaguers and having the patience to train them up into a competitive, lasting team. I still remember my first night of BPL in the original Passion team of 2007 and being in awe of some players being able to throw hammers further than I could throw my backhand. We made the semis in that first season (not hard in a 5-team league), going down to an established Bugs machine still featuring Jason, Mike and Mat. Two grand final appearances followed in ensuing seasons in what was a largely successful period for the team. This of course, preceded the dark ages of 2009 marked by AttendanceSheetgate, which saw disqualification from the semis, misfiring of the Tomsteve for MVP campaign (ironically, Passion took out the spirit prize that season) and getting some noses out of joint at QUDA for almost defaulting on a loan to buy new shirts. And so the existence of the UQ Passion team ends after a universe point win in the grand final of a season of fluctuating fortunes, perhaps characterizing the ups and downs of a turbulent 3-year run that has now come full circle. Just to remind you that the UQ league final was run and won (congratulations to Rainbow Smash) last week and we are having a 6-7 week break from Wednesday night ultimate at UQ. Althogh it was announced that we would have lights tonight, they are actually not booked. A few people will be down at the fields to play some disc golf. If you are keen for a study break, or just some disc golf, come on down to the fields 6:15-6:30.

Learn to play and pick up nights start again July 28th. Season 2 looks to be bigger and better so study hard, good luck with exams and see you all back at the start of next semesters.

After 7 weeks of competition, we have now finished the round robin stage of the league. Unfortunately we were not able to finish all 10 rounds due to a couple rained out nights and a cancelled night by UQ sport. However, we still have a couple more nights of conventional league and a pickup type night running during SWOTVAC.

The Table:

Hammer Time were put ahead of spirit due to their Head-to-head record. Although it was 1-1, Spirit's win occurred when they had a handful of quality pickups.

The semi-final, this wednesday, will be:

Please remember that it is GAME ON at 6 due to state of origin. So be there 15-30 mins earlier for a throw and warmup. If you have any friends that weren't there last week, or came late, please pass this information along.

The week after, weather permitting, will be the finals. Every team will still play a game on this night. We will stagger the start times so everyone will be able to watch the second half of the final and enjoy some pizza and 'drinks.' After the finals, we will also hold our AGM as we have decided to move it into the middle of the year. If you are interested in any position on the UQ Ultimate Committee please let either myself (BW), Trevor, Will or Nat know. Alternatively you can say this at the meeting.

The Ultimate Party. I don't know many details, but I believe it is scheduled for 4th June and will be at Will's place. Hopefully more details will be posted shortly or announced on Wednesday.

For those who may have turned up late, or didn't hear the word; UQ Sport had shut down field 7 due to "maintenance" of some sort. Unfortunately there were some communication errors and this didn't seem to be passed on to the club. Perhaps they thought they'd pull an April Fools joke a little early??

As it is the Easter break next week, there won't be any games on either. The first Wednesday back will be on so be sure to get back down and get your ultimate fix. In the mean time make sure you have a spare disc with you and keep practising; there's nothing better than spending all your free time chasing that plastic!

We will also be looking to get league fees off anyone that is yet to pay. There *should* be an abundance of frisbees for sale tomorrow evening as well.

A rebellion has begun- who knew we had so much club pride?

Brace yourself for some thoughts from another regular UQ player- I’m not sure whether he would like to remain anonymous but it seems much more dark and mysterious this way. I’m sure he will reveal himself if he wishes…

“Many UQ Ultimate players have the taste of oppression fresh on our pallets after the malicious assault that BUB hurled at our beloved blog last week. Many, if not all, of the critiques come from a biased view of both ultimate obsession and blog egotism. Herein, I will state our case (aka my personal rambling justification) for each of the criteria that are apparently so vitally important (according to BUB) for an ultimate blog to be successful.

Key bloggers: We have some that are wonderful

Posts over the last seven days: I view the UQ blog as a bulletin board for important information that players need to know. There are posts that give information on upcoming tournaments, field closers and important league information. The majority of players in the UQ league are social players who play once a week and this is all the information they need or care for. Other blogs run by more fanatical of ultimate players will post several things every week on topics ranging from spirit of the game to equipment to mindless gossip to other drool that tends to fill up the internet. Nine out of ten of the players in the UQ league could care less, so why bother?

Following: Apparently number of comments is directly proportional to a following. If the posts consist of straight forward league information, what use is it to comment besides to make you feel important?

Layout: Scientific studies have shown that black background with white text is one of the easiest on the eyes for reading. You’re welcome! Also, the black background uses less energy. You’re welcome! Black background with white text is more versatile in regards to lighting conditions in which the reader is viewing the blog and the type of monitor she/he is using. Again, you’re welcome!

Content: The content is exactly what it needs to be for the majority of our players. Some of the criticism has been focused at our BPL teams, and to date there has been little if any mention of these teams or the league. But personally, I use the blog solely for Wednesday night information, and on that platform it provides exactly what the players need to know.

Humor/Heckle Mix: Apparently if you regard yourself as funny, you need to try and convince as many people as possible of that fact by forcing your often missing humor on the readers of your blog. Blogs don’t need to be funny and they don’t need to heckle. For a sport that champions spirit of the game, I find it interesting that heckling is regarded as a positive aspect of a blog.

Appropriate Recognition of the Brisbane Ultimate Blog: Here we fail miserably. There appropriate amount is none and we have some. (Is this where I say ‘oh snap’?)

Final Comment: We are students. We play for fun. We are in one league. We would rather be outside throwing a disc with friends than reading mundane dribble on a blog.

UQ against blogging oppression

Clearly being forced to hobble on crutches all week has made me little bit more agitated than usual but posts made on other blogs commenting on the way we here at UQ Ultimate function have really got my back up….

For those of you who are unaware Frisbee players are not only obsessed with that silly piece of plastic but also have some strange passion for blogs. Cutting a long justification short, the Brisbane (even QLD!) Frisbee scene has one leading blogger who I’ve recently come to realise has a monopoly on our local frisbee blogging service.

Without needing to name names (because its so damn obvious) Brisbane’s Frisbee blog expert, recently asserted blog dictator, has his finger in every pie! He has a strong hold on every single avenue that any Brisbane Frisbee blogger could ever reasonably blog about and what’s more its fricking hilarious, informative and a great way to procrastinate. But if any newb decides to create something of their own it looks outdated, rehashed, B-grade.
However the injustice does not stop there, the chief blog artist has used his powers and influence to create his own Frisbee blogging regime. He has taken it upon himself to set up rules about blogging recently criticizing layout, content, heckle/humour mix etc and sees himself as the final authority on all subjects. He may claim this is all friendly, helpful advice but then why do we constantly feel like we’ve been told what to do?

My fellow friends, as this is a student blog its time we students do what students do best! No not downing jugs of beer and living off mi goreng… I’m talking about protesting!
Like the unknown rebel in Tiananmen Square lets take a stand against the oncoming tank that is the oppressive Frisbee blogging regime that only looks to control us and hold us back!
Here on this blog from today we will about post about who ever we want, what ever we want, whenever the hell we feel like it! Whose with me?! (You guys better not leave me hanging out here all by myself)

If you have no idea what I’m talking about take a look at BUB’s post Full Hand, UQ Ultimate Blog got absolutely roasted. Not sure why JDR likes to specifically rip into us compared to other clubs… but he seems to do it a lot (actually Dojo gets a fair hiding as well). Is he secretly pissed off that we keep winning Club of the Year? Who knows….

Now to completely contradict what I was ranting and raving about - if anyone would like to start regularly posting stuff about BPL you are more than welcome. Perhaps a newb to BPL could give us the scoop on the goings on between the big ego’s of the league?

It is that time of year again - TONIGHT UQ League will be organising its 6 teams for the season and the year .

SO if you want to play in the league then please get down there and have a throw from about 6pm. At about 6:30 we will get together and introduce this semester's captains/coach (so they had better be on time ;-) then if you have friends that you want to play on the same team make it known at the appropriate time so you will be (hopefully) be placed on a team together and we will aim for evenly matched and even sized teams with all those that aren't to fussed. These team will become your chance to pour your blood, sweat and tears for, wear strange colours to belong and your chance to shine as a fun loving ultimate group.

If you don't plan to play and pay for this semester's league then you are welcome tonight but please make this week your last week and please don't mix up the team making process.

Please look out for Kaitlin, Will, Tyson, Trevor and Brenton leading this process and the whole night tonight.

The UQ League is a casual mixed league, with deep roots in the St Lucia campus of the University of Queensland. The league is a good place to get an introduction to Ultimate, meet new people, and keep fit with friends. While most of the people who play in the league study or work at UQ, it is open to anyone who wants to come down.

The league in Semester 1, 2010, begins with two Come and Try nights, on the 24th of Feb and 3rd of March, which are free nights to introduce new players to Ultimate and allow everyone to meet other people. Following that is a 12 week league, culminating in finals and an end of semester party - traditionally at the Regatta and featuring many shenanigans.

When: Wednesday nights all UNI semester, 6.00 PM for a 6:30 start - 8:30 PM.

So last Wednesday saw UQ Ultimate’s return to Oval 7 for our first league of the decade!

It was great to see lots of new people coming down and having a go as well as all the old folks getting out there for a run around.

We’ll be doing the same again this Wednesday (3^rd March) starting at 6pm on Oval 7 (cnr of Coleridge St and sir Fred Schonell Dr). There’ll be a small throwing session for beginners and then some pick-up games until 8.30ish pm.

The sweetest thing

So Friday night I was lucky enough to experience every Frisbee players dream. I stepped on the field at dusk with the sun slowly setting, the air cool and perfectly still. The spotlights lit a delicate, flawless expanse of grass akin to the MCG on boxing day.

The showcase field was ours! We felt like… no, we were champions! If only for those few short hours it felt like in some magical way that Frisbee was a sport people cared about! What had we done to impress the Frisbee Gods that were blessed with this once in a lifetime opportunity? The grandstand was empty but it didn’t matter (we felt important just throwing in front of it) this moment was ours to treasure. There were no idiot footballers, dogs, plovers or small children to dodge. No fear of potholes, rock hard cricket pitches or dirt piles nothing to distract us from perfecting no-look full-field hammers.

For the work-obsessed university academics who finally unlocked themselves from their desks and were heading home or the drunkard med students in their scrubs stumbling through campus on to their way to the next watering-hole, they will have almost forgotten the two strangers they saw on Oval 5 throwing a Frisbee (a considerably farther distance than most normal people are capable of).

But for those of us who are constantly shoved off fields because various other “more important” sporting leagues begin, it was a small victory in a long and weary battle. Brisbane ultimate players are field vagabonds will we ever find a home?

With Token Black Team taking out the minor premiership by a point - G Spot were hungry for a victory in the final of the league. The game started with a flurry of points to the G Spot going up 3 - 0 as Token tried to adapt to a new game plan. With some awesome lays and sky graps by Jamie, Brenton and others Token got back into the game and scores seesawed through the 5s, 6s and 7s. The height, good throws and high pressure from G Spot gave them the lead as the crowd and drinks increased on the sideline. Going out to 10 - 8 before the game cap was called to 11. The noisy crowd cheered for an extra effort from Token to score and try and tie the game up but with a big d and clinical o - G Spot finished the game with Melissa Spalding catching the WINNER.

Other games - Pure Awesomeness bet their 4th place of the ladder and their opponents Raiders of the lost Stark in a close Bronze play-off and no one wanted the wooden spoon with a very boyish Good Times fighting out a 9 all draw against the ever mixed up Friskee Discness.

Finals Frisbee - Today 4 Nov

Games for 3rd and 5th will start at 6:30pm - finishing with time to watch some of the final for 1st and to try and finish before any rain/storm starts :-S
The game for GOLD will start at 6:45pm and last point called at 8:15pm

games will be Pink (11) vs Green (13) for Wood Field 1
Yellow (17) vs White (20) for Bronze Field 2
Red (23) vs Black (24) for Gold Field 3

Remeber even though it's finals - Spirit of the Game is the first and foremost rule and the glory that comes with winning the Spirit of the league will be announced today.

Please bring something to share with your team mates for after the game and during the AGM - ie lollies/food/goon bag.... whatever you want to share :-)

In mind of tonights AGM

Vision of a CLUB.....

Our club should provide a platform for Ultimate players to play in every event/tournament/league in a team representing that club. It should provide opportunities to training, coaching and development.

UQ Ultimate also has a goal to maintain ties to the University of Queensland - therefore UQ students/staff/alumni are our primary player base and main focus for all club activities.

With that in mind:

Positions required in the upcoming AGM for the 6 mths till June 2010 and then into the future at every AGM held in late May - early June. AGM is being changed to help smooth the transition from 1 exec to the next... (only 1 month holiday in winter not 4 months)

Exec - has the responsibility of the Club and all events. Needs to meet at least once each 1-2 months and should play 1 - 2 nights. Plus feel the desire to play for UQ at every chance they can. I.E. in leagues and tourneys.

President - the buck stops here
Vice President - President elect.... learning the ropes and helping the exec - getting ready to run the club after the next AGM
Secretary - Book work, mail, taking notes
Treasurer - Money and organisation

Important roles
UQ League Coordinator - running the UQ league with the help of the exec and others
UQ BUML Coordinator - be a link between BUML director and UQ teams and UQ Exec (and play in the league for UQ would be ideal)
UQ Women's Coordinator - be a link between league director and UQ teams and UQ Exec (and play in the league for UQ would be ideal)
UQ BPL Coordinator - be a link between BPL director and UQ teams and UQ Exec (and play in the league for UQ would be ideal)
Club Coaching Staff - be available and have the desire to coach beginners for the Club and the UQ League or coach the Mixed Rep. team or the Baby rep team or any team representing UQ Ultimate

Web blogger/coordinator - blog results and updates and interviews with Ultimate Lovers etc etc
Social Coordinator - be the go to person for our social calendar - parties, disc golf, pick up, drink and eat nights?!
Fund-raising Coordinator - Jump start our fundraising, with ideas that come into reality
Lovefest Coordinator - be the go to person/people for OUR own TOURNAMENT
Team Captain for UQ league in 2010 - 6-8 males and 6-8 females

UQ wins Frisbee GOLD at AUG and team UQ wins Spirit

UQ Ultimate Lovers played out at thrilling 9-8 final against Uni of Sydney. Winning their second universal point game against that team and scoring the GOLD medal at AUG. JMac and Princess also made the Green and Gold team that would represent Australia if a team was sent to the World Uni Games. It was a great week full of on and off the field action and special thanks must go to those that came and cheered the team in the final stages of the tourney.
Other news - Team UQ wins the Spirit of the Games comp scoring another trophy for the display at UQ Sport ;-)

Ultimate Lovers into the Semis

UQ's Ultimate Lovers are going into the semi finals with 6 wins and a close loss to their name. The Gold Coast has been hosting a great AUG 2009 and with a 3pm game start and a Ultimate Rubrics Cube Party on tonight..... we are going to living the good life.
Games have been tough with solid teams send from U Syd, Monash, Flinders, BU and Newcastle.. just to name a few. The elements have been testing the players too... with strong cross winds, up and down winds and a blazing sun. And we are loving it. So enjoy a night off league and come party with us or come the the fields tomorrow in runaway bay.
